Carl Buchheister to Duryea Morton Letter, March 14, 1973
Buchheister writes that while there are large trees on Hog Island it is unlikely that they can be considered virgin forest. Having taken a position on the U. S. National Arboretum's advisory council, he requests that Morton send materials to be sold in the arboretum's shop. Buchheister closes directing Morton to have bluebird boxes installed, noting that the birds are becoming an endangered species due to DDT and competition with European starlings.
